Smaller organizations in particular benefit from this service as they often don’t need (or can’t make a financial business case for) a full time CFO, but benefit greatly from having such a person available as part of their support team only as needed. We see two main types of engagements for fractional CFO services, as follows.
- Project services – this is a situation where a company has a particular project or challenge for which they could use the support of an experienced CFO. There are many examples of such projects, including capital raises, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, transitional oversight and management when an existing CFO leaves a company and many more. These engagements tend to be reasonably short in terms of time frame with a clear end objective.
- Operational and strategic services – these engagements tend to be ongoing and vary widely in complexity. From an operational perspective, we provide support in everything from business process development to oversight and management of budgeting, cashflow and other operational processes, as well as being available for discussions on situations such as lease vs. buy of capital assets when and as they come up. Strategically, we support with definition and execution of overall corporate objectives in the short-, medium- and long-term and crafting and implementing company policies, such as remuneration and bonus structures for key employees and management.
Whether as a quarterback for a particular project or a trusted advisor for the day-to-day issues that arise in every company, an experienced CFO is a great resource to have at your disposal. We make it possible to have access to that resource without carrying a C-suite salary.
